Good girls finish last, I always heard this statement and never truly understood it growing up. You see, typically it is the “good girl” who finished last in life. Can I tell you that it is an amazing thing to be a “good girl.” Honestly, we are all inherently evil, but thanks to Jesus we have been made new. He created us fearfully and wonderfully. He loves everyone, but I am going to be real with you today… being the girl that follows God sometimes stinks! When the guys go after the easy ones, others gang up on you because you are trying to make the right decision, you are cast aside because you wont gossip, you make a bad grade since you do not cheat like everyone else… the list can go on and on.
I had a real honest conversation with my mom this week. I said, “people always told me I was the “marrying type,” so why are all the “dating types” getting married before me?” She proceeded to tell me to practice what I preach, so I decided to write a blog about it in hopes that we can grow in our knowledge of God. (Sidebar, I do have two lovely marrying type friends that both got engaged this week and this post is not regarding you 🙂 haha)
I know your frustrations may not be exactly the same as mine, but following God is HARD! It is tempting to want to be a woman who is “appreciated,” “accepted,” and “loved” from the people of this world. Whether that be by men, friends, teachers, or even family. However, we must remind ourselves that we are a treasure. That even though we are stuck with a longer race to the finish line of our temporary hopes and dreams, that it will be worth it and even sweeter in the end.
I was once bullied and outcasted in middle school. Even though I am 22, I still have a memory of painful things said and done to me during those times. I prayed and prayed for the Lord to send me a godly friend and in the 9th grade I met Avery. God not only brought her to me and me to her (she had the same struggle and had been praying for a friend too). He even placed us at the same college as roommates. Our friendship has been rooted in Christ for 9 years now! It took two years to get that friend, but the Lord grew me in that time and it was worth it. We were good girls that finished last, but our friendship has been maintained for a very long time and it is true.
Whatever you feel like you are taking last place in today, know to keep God first and do not compare to others. When it feels like evil wins, stand strong. Do not hate, but hold on the hope and trust in the one that has already won the race!
Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
Be encouraged today,
